Ahhh, marriage. You’re together, you’re in love, you’re happy. Not a care in the world. Then, you get the most dreaded question ever: “So, when are you two going to have a baby?”
UGH.
STOP ASKING PEOPLE THIS QUESTION.
I think my husband and I were married for a hot minute the first time we were asked this question.
It’s horrible invasive, and honestly… rude. You have no idea what is happening or going on in their lives. Maybe they are physically unable to have children. Maybe they have been trying but nothing has happened yet. Maybe they were pregnant, but unfortunately lost the baby. Maybe, they are pregnant and just aren’t ready to tell anyone yet. Or maybe, they have decided not to have children.
Whatever the case may be, it’s none of anyone’s business. If they wanted you to know, they would have told you. That is a topic that is not open for discussion, or questions, unless the couple brings it up themselves.
I do not and will never understand why people think they have the right to ask whatever they want, whenever they want, and wherever they want. Co-workers are sometimes the wort culprits of this. Just because we happen to work in the same building and you know my name or you receive the occasional ‘good morning’ or I have allowed you to talk my ear off and I pretended to listen, does not classify us as friends. This also does not give you the green light to tell me you think I should just have a baby already. Yes, this is a true story.
Bringing another life into this world is something so precious, yet so private, especially in the beginning. We need to respect the privacy of those around us. We cannot pry into their personal lives even though we want to, or think we should be able to because we are ‘just curious’. I call that ‘just nosy’.
So people, let this be a lesson. Perhaps a difficult one, but let us all learn from this.
Be courteous. Be respectful. Be mindful. Be kind.
Please stop asking couples when they are going to have a baby.
